A NEW fundraising campaign has been launched to refurbish the therapeutic garden of the Pankhurst Centre in Salford.
A ‘Plant a Seed for Gender Equality‘ fundraise has been launched to raise £20,000 to completely refurbish the garden of Emmeline Pankhurst, the British suffragette leader, to make it a much more welcoming place to visit.
2018 will mark 100 years since women secured their right to vote in the UK, although arguably to this day, women are still fighting for gender equality. The Pankhurst centre, want to take action to commemorate the work of Emmeline Pankhurst, by building a ‘Suffragette Garden’ and foster the well-being of women who are going through social injustice today.
Elaine De Fries is the operational manager for the centre who also works for Manchester Women’s Aid.
There has been a major increase in people who attend the drop in sessions over the past couple of years.
In 2014, 129 people attended. In 2015, there were 220, and in 2016, the figure doubled, with 452 people attending.
Claire Moore, the organiser of the recent Dead Women Walking march, to remember the 105 women killed due to domestic violence this year, spoke out about the issues of domestic abuse and violence. She said:
The vision of the Pankhurst Centre is to completely transform the garden to make it a place which is therapeutic and comforting, specifically for women who are victims of domestic abuse and visit the centre regularly.
They have even put time choosing specific flowers to plant there which complements the whole idea of the garden – ones which are therapeutic and will help create a warm environment.
The project will only go ahead if 100% of the £20,000 is raised, otherwise, all the donations will be refunded as the target hasn’t been reached.
