Yard and Coop may be a Northern Quarter staple, but owner Laura Morris refuses to forget her roots. She spoke to Quays News about the restaurant’s new charity drive.

“Christmas is a time to think about family,” Laura Morris explains. “Not just our families but other people’s really.”

Over the festive period, revellers can bring in one of the items most needed by Manchester Central foodbank to enjoy staff priced drinks – just £2 for a pint.

Morris, owner of the popular chicken restaurant Yard and Coop told Quays News how the idea for the drive started.

“I live in Gorton, which is quite an impoverished area. I bumped into them [foodbank staff] outside my local Tesco, they were collecting.”

“I thought you know what, it was a really great to help families. The central foodbank really helps a lot of people inside Manchester and Greater Manchester –  I just think it’s a really great appeal.”

“What we decided to do is make everybody part of our team and we thought – what’s great about being part of our team? You get staff drinks prices! So if somebody brings a bag of shopping in, from the list, then we put that in our cage ready to take down. Then they can have a staff priced drink and they’re part  of our team, part of our family.”

The scheme runs over the Christmas period, though there are tentative plans to continue into the new year.
