A local environmental campaigner is urging people to be conscientious while enjoying the sun this summer.

Doug Robertson is a founding member of SeaStraw UK, a campaign aimed at reducing the consumption of single-use plastic straws, and has called for those out and about in the warmer weather to be mindful of their surroundings.

As well as avoiding plastic straws in bars and restaurants, Doug encourages picnic-goers to take their litter home with them, and for people visiting the coast to take two minutes out of their day to take part in a beach clean.

Doug also recommends carrying reusable shopping bags, coffee cups, and straws.

Doug’s appeal coincides with the UN’s World Environment Day, an annual event designed to encourage awareness and action for the protection of the environment.

This year’s event theme was ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, with particular emphasis on reducing plastic consumption in our everyday lives.

Watch an interview with Doug on the difference we as individuals can make this summer.
