Salford City have today confirmed that 24-year-old midfielder Nick Haughton has departed the club to join fellow National League side AFC Fylde for an undisclosed fee.

The former Fleetwood star arrived at Salford from the Cod Army in January earlier this year, helping the side win the National League North title, and secure promotion to the highest tier of non-league football in England.

Haughton had spells with Runcorn Town and Curzon Ashton before joining League One side Fleetwood in 2014. He made 40 appearances for Fleetwood in total, scoring just once.

It was at Salford where Haughton has enjoyed the best run of his career. Originally joining on loan from Fleetwood in 2016, and in 2017 where he netted 3 times in 17 games across both spells. After a goal filled spell with Chorley, netting 7 times in 17 games, Haughton rejoined Salford City on a two-and-a-half year deal.

Despite scoring three times in 22 appearances in 2018, the decision has now been made for Haughton to move on from the Ammies.

Salford City fans have reacted on Twitter, with some surprised at the decision to allow the midfielder to join a fellow National league side, with others wishing him the best of luck at his new club.

Haughton also took to Twitter, both to thank his former side, as well as proclaim his excitement to start a new chapter in his career with AFC Fylde.

Salford City have also wished Haughton all the best in his future career on the clubs official website, stating “We would like to thank Nick for all his efforts at the club, and wish him all the best in his future.”

Haughton will be back at the peninsula Stadium on the 22nd of April 2019 when his new side travel to Salford in the National League.
