Emergency Services were called to River Irwell Wednesday morning after reports of suspected human remains were found near Whit Lane, Pendleton.

Greater Manchester Police, Ambulance and Fire services arrived at the Jubilee Bridge, just off Britannia Street, at 9 am on Wednesday November 28.

A cordon was immediately set up, closing the bridge off, with officers standing guard as the investigation began.

In a statement Greater Manchester Police said:

Shortly before 9am on Wednesday 28 November 2018 police were called to a report that suspected human remains had been seen in the River Irwell near to Whit Lane, Pendleton.

Officers and specialist underwater teams attended and the remains have been identified as a human leg.

Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing but, at this time, there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

The North West Police Underwater Search and Marine Unit were also spotted at the scene entering the water

Witnesses saw two black bags being pulled from the water and later being placed in a police van.
