Keith Brookes has been given the BBC North West Unsung Hero Award for his commitment and fundraising for Monton Sports Club over 60 years.

Mr Brookes has played a major role in securing grants and constantly improving the club’s facilities.

Monton Sports Club nominated him as a credit to his incredible service to the foundation of their sports club. The manager of Monton Sports Club stated: “Keith was the outright obvious choice for nomination for the award.”

The win earns him a seat at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year show in December.

Mr Brookes is mainly passionate about lacrosse and cricket. He once played lacrosse for England at the world championships and he also played cricket for the Lancashire second team.

Thanks to him the club secured new cricket nets, a state of the art football pitch, a scorebox and new changing rooms. Monton Sports Club now offers up to five different sports including: cricket, lacrosse, tennis, junior football and squash.

The club has been running since 1903. During his involvement the club expanded from 300 members to 700 members in 20 years.

The head of Monton Sports club continued: “Keith’s main aim is to have the families enjoy themselves while their kids play, to create a friendly atmosphere.” He followed on to say: “There’s now a member’s bar, we all used to share the space, which wasn’t ideal.”

The sports club manager also added: “He’ll be with the sports club until the day he dies.”

As a result of winning this award Mr Brookes will be attending Sports Personality of the year on December 16, live from the Genting Arena in Birmingham.

There were also some other worthy nominees from Salford who came from different sporting backgrounds:
