Oswald Dixon, an RAF veteran with no known surviving family, has died at the age of 100.

Oswald joined the RAF in Kingston, Jamaica, in November 1944 as a flight mechanic and moved to Britain before World War II ended.

He rose to become a leading aircraftman and remained in the service teaching new recruits until he retired.

He was living alone in Salford until 2015 but due to illness and deteriorating sight, he was no longer able to live on his own.

He then moved to Broughton House, a charity and nursing home for veterans first established in 1916.

Oswald’s passing has seen hundreds send messages of sympathy and support

Chris Lindsay, the Chief Executive at Broughton House, said:

“At his 100th Birthday celebration, Oswald stated that he “always tried to live life as it should be lived, by doing things for other people”.
