Fans of Salford Red Devils were in for a treat last Saturday after their team unexpectedly made it to the Super League Grand Final. The team played against league leaders St Helens at Old Trafford, playing in front of over 64,000 fans.

Salford Red Devils suffered a 23-6 loss to St Helens, who were favourites prior to the match and comprehensively the better side on the night with no one from either side complaining about the outcome.

Salford Red Devils coach Ian Watson had nothing but praise for his players and the club, who did themselves justice and impressed during the game.

“Getting to the final has definitely helped people of Salford fall in love with their club again despite the disappointing result”,  he said.

The Super League Grand final was the final game for many key players at Salford Red Devils with Jackson Hastings, George Griffin and Josh Jones all set to leave.

Watson believes that the best way to fill those voids is to build a foundation within the club and bring academy players through the youth system and even more importantly, keeping and building on the support they’ve gained through this memorable campaign.

Ian Watson has a lot of faith that this experience will be extremely beneficial for all the players remaining at the club and that the players should be very proud but also states their is plenty of room for improvement.

Fans of Salford Red Devils were left with a bittersweet feeling following the result. A lot of them loved the experience of being able to watch their club at a venue like Old Trafford for the first time but were left disappointed on how one sided the match was in favour of St Helens.

One fan said, “It’s great to come here and watch our club on the big stage but the match was too one sided. I really hope they carry on from this but right now feeling a little let down.”

A lot of fans however have nothing to say but compliments as no one at all expected underdogs like Salford Red Devils to make it to a Grand Final, so it’s no surprise that the fans have so much praise for their club and the players, with even fans of other clubs like Swinton attending the match to support the team that represent the local area.

Another fan commented, “I still believe this is a good outcome for the club and will have a massive impact on rugby culture in Salford.”

Many fans did express however that they believe Salford will struggle next season unless they’re able to rebuild and replace the key players that they are losing, who were all extremely influential in helping Salford reach their place in Saturday’s final.

It was at no surprise that St Helens were the victorious side as they have only lost three games all season and finished top of the league with a 16 point margin.

It was the final game for St Helens coach Justin Holbrook who leaves his role on a huge win as Super League Grand Final winners. New coach Kristian Woolf has big shoes to fill when he takes over as their new head coach for the 2020 season.
