Swinton Lions are hosting a ‘heritage night’, celebrating the club’s history in order to help raise funds for the upcoming 2020 season.

Swinton Lions were formed in 1866 and are one of the oldest Rugby League teams in the country. The supporters trust hopes that their 150 year history as a club will entertain those who attend.

The heritage night will be organised and hosted by the Lions Supporter’s Trust. One of the members of the supporter’s trust, Ian Jackson, helped organise the fundraiser and believes it’s a great opportunity to learn about the club history.
Jackson says, “We worked really hard to identify ourselves as a club. We’ve got records of every player that has played for us, so we casted our minds back 50 years to our last league cup victory. We found some of the players who played that final and asked them for a Q&A; with the fans.”
Jackson also wanted to commemorate the 14 Swinton players who died during the first world war. He continued: “We created a little booklet about the 14 players who died. Some of the stories are really tragic and it looks at how the team coped during those times.”
The money raised will help the Swinton Lions fund training at the AJ Bell Stadium, home to Salford Red Devils. The money will also help support travel costs for the 2020 seasons, with Swinton having to travel places such as London and Toulouse.
The fundraiser will take place November 28th at Swinton Legion at 19:30. Tickets are £5 per person and can be bought from the White Swan Pub, Swinton. All information can be found on Swinton Lions website.
