A University of Salford student has won bronze in the ADCC British Open Championship.
Eoin Togher, 22, landed a head and arm choke in the quarter finals of the grappling competition, before being submitted by the eventual winner in the semi-final.
Eoin is relatively new to the sport, having only trained for two years in mixed martial arts. His Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and wrestling are his favourite of the disciplines, so despite the short time he has trained and with mental strength being so important in the sport, he felt confident going into the competition:
“I feel good, I have some experience in these competitions now. In my last three I have won two golds and a silver.
“It is really just about dedication and looking after yourself, if you put in the work you will see results.”
Despite the loss the Salford student found himself picking up the bronze after his opponents’ hand was broken.
Eoin competed in the under 65kg category, heavier than is usual fighting weight, meaning he was facing larger opponents than usual:
“I usually fight in the minus 60-kilogram category, so these boys are slightly bigger, but this sport is about skill as much as it is about strength, I am excited for the test.”
After the competition, Eoin’s disappointment was evident, but he kept his spirits high and was looking forward to his next challenge:
“Obviously not the result I wanted, but it always good to get a medal, especially at the ADCC British Open which a huge competition is known both nationally and internationally.
“We are aiming to get a fight booked February or March and will probably have a few more grappling competitions thrown in before then to keep the body in motion.”
Eoin goes straight back into training this week at his gym ‘Fighting Fit Manchester’ and will be ready for when the next competition comes around.
