Rail passengers in Salford faced major delays and cancellations last night amid a reported passenger disturbance at Manchester Victoria.

Trains heading to destinations including Blackpool, Swinton, Wigan, Leeds and Clitheroe were all affected by the disturbance, with disruption lasting late into the night.

Live departures from Salford Crescent, with many services facing severe disruption.

In a Twitter update, train operator Northern said: “Due to passengers causing a disturbance on a train at Manchester Victoria some lines will be blocked.”

However, some Twitter users are suggesting that staff at Manchester Victoria have in fact walked out of the station in a display of solidarity with another staff member, who is alleged to have been physically assaulted by a passenger.

One Twitter user wrote: “All the Platform staff at #ManchesterVictoria have walked out due to one of the staff being threatened with Violence, Good to see the Workforce sticking together!”

Whilst many travellers are frustrated or angered by this apparent decision, there has been a visible display of support for those involved.

Updates on the situation will be posted in due course on the Twitter pages of Northern and National Rail.
