Salford City

Salford Red Devils Head Coach Ian Watson has urged the people of Salford to get behind the city’s rugby league club this season and help build on the support that was created during the back end in 2019.

“What people need to understand is that it’s their team too and that they’re a part of our community. If we want to remain competitive then we need the city to get behind the team and turn up to the games to show their support and hopefully we can have scenes like those at the grand final last year,” explained Watson.

He added: “We’d like to think that the support is growing as we get closer to the season. We have really good links – the University of Salford – with our media team coming from there, our head analyst and some of our medical team come from there too.”

The Red Devils reached their first-ever Betfred Super League grand final last October, defying the odds having been tipped for relegation.

They kick-off their new season tonight with a repeat of that grand final as they travel to St. Helens. and will no doubt be out to get revenge.

“It’s a good fixture for us first up,” said Watson.

“It’ll be a great challenge for us and because we have new faces in our squad, it’ll allow us to gauge where we’re at and see if we have gelled as a team or whether we need to fine-tune our processes moving forward.

“That being said, I’m confident from what I’ve seen in pre-season that we can go there and cause them a problem,” he added.
