The Salford Angels are back with a new year full of events.

The group continually supports women in Salford, whilst giving them the opportunity to do new things, meet new people, and have a safe space.

The WI group have gathered all suggestions, which they got last June from the members, and carried out the most popular ones.

They have monthly meetings, carried out on the 3rd Thursday of each month at the Beacon Centre on London Street in Salford, at 6.30pm. There, they talk through any upcoming community events that they might be involved in, such as Armed Forces Day in June, and finish with a speaker or an activity such as learning a new dance, lots of cake and a raffle.

Annie from Salford Angels said: “We have our whole programme planned for this year with meetings for activities such as belly dancing and a quiz. We also have day trips and two trips away organised to Jersey and Krakow. Our activity programme is chosen by our members.”

This women’s institute was founded in 2011 by Suzanne Rigg who started the group off as a way for women in Salford to meet new people, get active in the community and have fun.

It was also founded to give women a safe space, because like Annie said: “there are so many spaces where women are not safe.

“Women experience abuse by their partners in their own homes, sexual harassment in the workplace, verbal abuse in public and threats via social media. The WI is for women of all ages to come together to support each other, build networks and make their voices heard.”

For over 100 years, the WI in Britain has supported several feminist campaigns such as ending violence against women and equal pay.

Annie also said: “We also go through each of the clubs/groups within our WI, such as Craft Group, Cinema Club, Choir, etc, and say what we have been doing in each and when the next group meeting is, particularly for new members.”
