The half term is approaching and the dread of how to fill five full days of no school is beginning to settle, but do not fear, we have a list of 14 family friendly fun ideas to keep you busy over the half term, and the best bit – many of them are free!

Send your children to one of Salford’s fun-filled holiday camps!

Sayo and Sparky camp is for 8 to 16 year-olds and takes place at the Oasis Hub at MediaCityUK. The holiday camp costs £2 per person per day, so therefore it is a bargain for the various fun sports activities, and now, the new theater performance and silent disco technology that will be available. A free lunch will be provided for all participants and free transport is available from most schools in Salford.

Walkden High School holiday camp offers similar fun activities including multi-sports, football on the 3G pitch and arts and crafts workshops as well as the new theater group on Tuesday 18th February. The camp runs weekdays of the half term from 10am to 3pm and FREE transport is available from most schools in Salford, but packed lunch and refreshments are required.

Ambrose Barlow High School holiday camp allows children of ages 5-12 to experience a variety of workshops and coaching sessions including dance, drama, music and sport with a team of specialist tutors and coaches. The camp costs £15-£20 a day or £44-£68 a week but is available from 8am to 6pm.

Enjoy big screen entertainment at VUE Cinema

Vue Cinema can be found on the second floor of the Lowry Outlet Mall, and has recently been refurbished with reclining chairs. Mini Mornings take place in the school holidays and on weekends from 10am, it costs only £2.49 for a Mini Morning ticket for both adults and children. The popular film Doolittle is currenty screening at Vue Lowry, as well as Spies in disguise and Sonic the Hedgehog which is set to be released on the 14th February.

Meet real-life Veterans and Eyewitnesses at the Imperial War Museum North

On the 18th and 20th of February, IWM is holding a unique event ‘We Were There: Meet Veterans and Eyewitnesses’ from 11am until 3pm. This is a limited opportunity so make sure you head down there quickly to make the most of this incredible event. The IWM, and this event, is FREE so be sure to visit and explore the museum for an educational and interactive day out.

Visit Salford Quays very own Ping Pong Parlour

Take a cruise down the Quays on a Quays adventure boat

See the Quays from a totally unique perspective by hopping aboard the Princess Katherine and gaining insight on the history of the Quays whilst feasting on the fully stocked bar. This is a must for football fans who want to cruise past Old Trafford where Manchester United Play.

You can sit inside or outside, so this activity is weather appropriate!

Visit the Makers Market on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd February which is located in the Piazza outside the Lowry Outlet Mall and Lowry Theater. The carefully selected stalls will allow browsers the chance to meet the producers and sample the goods whilst enjoying the music and performance so it is worth a visit for the food and arts obsessed!

 

Attend Tudor Training School at Ordsall Hall

On Tuesday 18th and Thursday 20th of February at 11am and 12pm, you have the chance to meet a Tudor and find out what a day in the life of a Tudor child would be like through a series of fun games, quests and challenges. Tickets only cost £2 and is on a drop-in basis so no booking is required!

Get sporty in the Quays with windsurfing, kayaking and rafting at the Helly Hansen water-sports centre

There’s hundreds of activities waiting for family fun at the water-sports centre from rafting, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, raft building and bell boating. Or if you prefer to keep your feet dry, there is even a n 8 meter indoor climbing wall or you can test out your map reading skills by doing urban orienteering around Salford Quays.

Take a CBBC tour around MediaCityUK

Following the traditional BBC tour, a CBBC tour for children aged between 6 and 11 is now also available. The tour provides kids with the chance to learn about their favourite programmes such as Blue Peter and News Round and take their 15 minutes of fame as a CBBC presenter. Adult tickets cost £13, and children’s tickets cost £9, a family ticket for 4 can be purchased for £38.

Get creative with nature in the winter sunshine or explore Salford Museum and Art Gallery on a rainy day

Salford Museum offers a range of activities from exploring the museum with a gallery trail for £2. The trail pack also includes a colouring book and stickers, be sure to  visit the sweet shop which is open every Friday in the school holidays! The museums ‘Lovley Leaves’ event allows the family to get creative out in nature and create your own leaf inspired artwork for only £2!

Take your little ones to a storytelling event at one of Salford’s Libraries

‘What the Ladybird Heard’ by Juila Donaldson & Lydia Monks is taking over our libraries. Keep the little ones occupied with some spellbinding storytelling, a mini-beast hunt and creative activities and only costs between £1 and £3. The event begins in Cadishead Library on Tuesday 18th February form 2pm to 3pm, Lower Kersall Library on Wednesday 19th February from 10:30am to 11:30pm  and the event will be at Height Library on Thursday 20th February.

Enjoy the outdoors and green space Salford has to offer

Peel Park provides a landscaped park with a play area and sports pitches, and is also home to Salford Museum. Buile Hill Park is home to a tree trail and a large pitch and putt, tennis courts and picnic areas and a cafe. Ordsall Hall is home to its very own park with extensive gardens that follow styles related to the history of the Hall including a Tudor Style Knot Garden and a WW1 Allotment. So get outdoors and expell some energy this half term!
