An aspiring singer-songwriter from Pendleton is making his mark on the Salford music scene.

Jace Campbell, 16, has released a new song called History is History to shine the spotlight to how Salford’s heritage is disappearing.

College student Jace said: “‘History is History’ is about how the old beloved buildings in Salford are being knocked down and being replaced by high-rise monstrosities.

“Salford is Salford, it’s not Manchester. With all these buildings growing, it looks like Manchester is creeping into Salford; there’s no border anymore.”

Jace performing his original song, ‘History is History’, live at Salford Now.

The inspiration for the song came from a discussion with his dad and uncle.

Jace added: “There’s a pub called ‘The Crescent’, and they (his dad and uncle) were talking about the times they used to go in there in the 90s and how they loved it. One of them said, ‘I hope it doesn’t get knocked down’, and they told me about how all these buildings in Salford are going. My dad said something like, ‘Salford’s history is slowly becoming history’.”

His music journey began when he was just eight-years-old after his uncle showed him his chords on the guitar. From then, his sound has been inspired by the Manchester music scene, by groups such as Oasis, Stone Roses and The Smiths.

“At the time (of writing the song), I was listening to The Smiths, and that’s where the 12-string comes in. I was inspired by ‘William, It Was Really Nothing’, with the fast chord.”

He writes and records songs whilst also studying music at FutureSkills college in MediaCityUK.

Another one of Jace’s songs, ‘Lost’, was inspired by the Manchester Arena Bombing, and has over 1,300 views on YouTube.

Jace is supporting The One Eyed General’s Bandit at Aatma, Manchester, on March 21.

Tickets are £5.

‘History is History’ lyrics

The overcast skies are painted white

And the broken bricks still stand to this day

The rain falls on the ancient graffite walls

That still have something to say

They’re knocking down old and erecting new

They’re ripping out our hearts and soul too

Trying separate you and me

Oh history is history

A beautiful girl is trying to earn

She’s working long busy hours

When will they learn

When will they learn

It’s ours, it’s ours

They’re knocking down old and erecting new

They’re ripping out our hearts and soul too

Trying separate you and me

Oh history is history

What have we done?

What can be done?

We never used to fear

That all this one day might disappear

They’re knocking down old and erecting new

They’re ripping out our hearts and soul too

Trying separate you and me

Oh history is history

I Said they’re knocking down old and erecting new

They’re ripping out our hearts and soul too

Trying separate you and me

Oh history is history

History is history (oh yeah)

History is history

History is history (oh yeah)

History is history (oh yeah)
