A Ken Sio brace was not enough as Salford Red Devils lost 12-22 at home to Wakefield Trinity on Sunday.

The first half was an arm wrestle between two sides that were looking to bounce back from defeats last week in the Super League.

However, it was Salford who struck first after a quarter of an hour, with some great play from Tui Lolohea finding winger Ken Sio on the right flank, who returned the ball to Lolohea before the stand-off touched down.

Some back and forth play followed afterwards, with Wakefield finally able to get themselves on the scoreboard in the 25 minutes.

Salford seemed to switch off for a moment, giving Trinity’s Max Jowitt, the opportunity to break the line and ground the ball between the sticks, converting his own try afterwards.

Salford started the second-half a lot livelier, taking the lead again after 45 minutes, Sio crossing in the right corner.

But Trinity responded with a second try of their own soon after, Tom Johnstone scoring under the posts before Jowitt managed a simple conversion.

It took Wakefield only five minutes to increase their lead, winger Bill Tupou after 58 minutes narrowly avoiding being pushed into touch on the right to land the ball.

With Salford on the back foot, Wakefield continued to press on and it was substitute, Kelepi Tanginoa, who lengthened his side’s lead with some strong running to the right of the sticks that Salford’s defensive line could not deal with.

A late consolation try for the home team via Sio drew Salford closer but Wakefield held on to claim the points at the AJ Bell.

Salford now travel to Catalan Dragons next week as they look to turn around poor start to the season.
