Salford Royal Hope Hospital

Salford Royal Hospital has been named in the top 100 hospitals in the world and the joint third-best hospital in the country according to a study by Newsweek and Statista.

The 676-bed hospital is the only centre representing the North-West of England in the top 10, getting a 91.1 per cent rating in Newsweek’s 2020 Best Hospitals study.

The lists are based on three data sources – hospital recommendations from peers, results from patient surveys and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) – for example, quality of treatment and hygiene measures.

Zaf Naqui, consultant hand and wrist surgeon at Salford Royal, said: “There are some very good reasons why Salford Royal would be rated top three hospitals in the country.

“The culture within the hospital and the entire trust, right from the top through to the shop floor where we deliver our care, is one of being focused on the patients despite the pressures that all hospitals may be under in terms of NHS pressures.

“That has not detracted from keeping patients at the centre of care and that is something I have noticed that runs right through Salford Royal.

“It’s reaffirming and a great honour to serve the residents of Salford and beyond.

“There is a few aspects to the rating, one is to make the grade as one of the top 100 hospitals in the world which is an enormous achievement in itself.

“To then be recognised as one of the top three in the UK and the top in the North-West is a great achievement and is testament to how the entire hospital functions. It does not surprise me that this has been picked up and recognised by a group of researchers.”

Greg Broadhurst, a volunteer and vice chair of MND Association in Manchester, has praised the support provided at Salford Royal for people suffering from Motor Neurone Disease.

“They are always forward thinking in motor neurone care, the neurologist team are brilliant,” he said.

“A close family member had broken her leg and they had her back on her feet within two days.

“In the old building the care was so good and the care is just as good in the new building.”

This year’s rankings have seen Salford Royal rise to joint-third in the country, level with Freeman Hospital and The Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

Salford Royal saw its rating rise from last year’s score of 89.7 per cent – a 1.4 per cent increase.

The methodology uses these three data sources and checks them with a medical journalist.

The study says: “The preliminary results were checked in terms of plausibility by a medical journalist and his international network. The results of this validation were then incorporated quantitatively in the first criteria.”

Some Salford residents had this to say about Salford Royal on Twitter.
