Theatre Closure

Salford Arts Theatre has launched a crowd-funding campaign  in an attempt to save Salford theatres from closing permanently.

The campaign has already raised more than £2,600 but more is desperately needed as Covid-19 restrictions make it difficult or impossible for venues to operate.

The appeal from joint artistic directors of Salford Arts Theatre Roni Ellis and Scott Berry says:

“This is the first time we have tried to raise funds using Crowdfunder. Due to the Covid-19 virus and our subsequent closure at the beginning of March, we have been unable to bring any wonderful performances to the people of Salford.

“We are an unfunded venue. All of our income is derived from our ticket sales and this closure has left us with an insecure future.

“We are trying to raise money to invest in new ways of bringing theatre to our audiences. Any money raised will be spent on new equipment to aid this.

“First and foremost, the initial funding will help to purchase recording equipment for a performance that our young performers are currently working on.

“We have been overwhelmed by all the support we have received so far along with personal messages.”

People have shown their support to Salford Arts Theatre on Twitter:

@philpearson_ink talked about his experience with the theatre. He tweeted: “A short play of mine was on here last November with five others. Each play had local Salford kids in them. It was a joy to see, but so was seeing the sheer pride on the faces of the mams and dads all around me. This theatre does great things for that community. Help if you can.”

Salford Arts Theatre is a 112-seater theatre in Kemsing Walk, off Tunbridge Square, Liverpool St. It aims to produce theatre for those who wouldn’t normally visit the theatre throughout the year.

It is the only independent theatre in Salford and is self-funded.

Originally the theatre was built for The Salford Players; a local group who gave opportunities to the community and aspiring actors such as Robert Powell and Sir Ben Kingsley.
