After emerging victorious on Friday night, Salford boxer Tommy Fury is closing in on Deontay Wilder’s brother in a bout that will ‘Capture the public’s imagination.’

Fury returned to the ring at the BT Sport Studios in Stratford, London, but because of the Covid-19 pandemic the bout took place behind closed doors. His opponent was ‘The Baltic Bomber’ Genadij Krajevskii, however he wasn’t able to ‘bomb’ out Fury who disposed of the Lithuanian via an uppercut which rendered him unconscious in the second round.

He posted on his Twitter, simply “Job done.”

Originally from Eccles, Salford, Tommy Fury met his current partner, Molly-Mae Hague, through his antics on Love Island, and has amassed a massive 3.1 million followers on Instagram. However he is now showing his appetite for competition in the ring rather than a Spanish villa.

After his brother Tyson defeated Deontay Wilder in February via 7th round knock out to claim the WBC world heavyweight championship at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada, it’s now looking like the grudge will carry on down to the younger siblings. In the build up to his latest bout, Tommy expressed an interest in a fight with Deontay’s brother Marsellos.

In the pre fight press conference he said: “He can get exactly what his brother got if he wants it. If he wants to pop up and let some stuff go, I’ll let my own stuff go, I’d stay safe and sound in America if I was him.”

The rumored fight is already one that has got fans talking, with one user posting on Twitter ‘Tommy would destroy Wilder’s brother.’

One person who is excited by the prospect of the fight is Salford City Radio’s Paul Whiteside.

He said: “It’ll be interesting, you could have a double header there. Those sorts of fights are what people want to see. It’d be a great ticket seller and one that would capture the public’s imagination, so why not?”

The host of The ‘Inside the Mind of a Fighter’ podcast, Jonny Rashman, was impressed by the Love Island star’s performance and is also intrigued by this potential battle.

He said Fury treated fans to fireworks in the bout. “The way Fury went about his business impressed me, the jab looked sharp, dare I say it, Tyson Fury-esque.”

A potential fight between the younger brothers of the two best heavyweights on the planet is one that Rashman thinks shows off Tommy’s knowledge of how to appeal to fans.

He added “It’s a case of Fury showing off his promotional brain. He knows what gets people talking, after all there’s a reason he chose to appear on Love Island and it’s not because he dreamt of becoming a reality TV star. Love it or hate it, everyone will tune in for another slice of Fury vs Wilder.”

After Fury’s victory, people will be hoping for a step up in opposition after his first four opponents had all lost more fights than they’d won. A fight with Marsellos Wilder is a grudge match which would appeal to boxing fans on both sides of the Atlantic. After his first four fights took place against unknown opposition, a big fight like this is one that would likely excite the Love Island contingent who’ve started to pay attention to his career in the ring.
