Salford City face Bolton Wonderers this Saturday as the Ammies look to “turn the tables” following their defeat to Bolton in November in the reverse fixture.

A player who’s keen to get back on the pitch is Salford midfielder Richie Towell, whose hopeful he can get some playing time again having recently returned from a leg injury that kept him out for two months.

Speaking about his injury and return in recent weeks, Towell said: “I’ve been seeing how well the lads were doing and I just wanted to be out there on the pitch doing something for the team, and when you can’t do that, it’s frustrating.”

“But I’m back now and I feel great, (the) injury (has had) not one problem with it the last month, so I know it’s fully healed. So it’s a good time to be back.”

Recently Salford’s form has been slipping, falling down to 9th place with just 1 win in the last 5 games, which are disappointing results if they hope to reach their promotion expectations.

Towell admitted himself results had not been ideal, reflecting on the Ammies’ recent loss to Oldham.

He said: “The number of chances we had last week, the amount of times we hit the bar, hit the post and the amount of ones-on-ones we had, we should’ve had the game out of sight.”

But he is hopeful they can turn this the season around, starting with a win on the weekend.

He said: “Bolton are a top side, they have a lot of good players in their squad.

“Hopefully we can stamp our mark on the game and hopefully we can take 3 points cause it’s what we need.”

He went on to say: “The club (Salford) has come from the lower leagues and did an amazing job, and now obviously it’s our turn to try and get the club up a couple of more divisions to where they [want to] be”.

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the football landscape hugely, keeping fans out of stadiums and the way in which players can train and ultimately stay fit is more complicated.

Towell shared his experience of going through an injury with a pandemic looming.

He said: “It’s made it really difficult, at the start it wasn’t too bad because I still had access to all the gyms.”

“But then obviously, the gyms were closed and that was an absolute nightmare, so I was lucky enough the club was able to give me some stuff to take home to my house, I’m lucky enough that the physio’s here are really good and they helped me through it really well.”
