Salford’s famous pub, ‘The Crescent’, could be set to reopen.

The grade II listed building, which closed in 2017, sits on the A6 corridor and is rich in local history.

It’s claimed that Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels used to frequent the public house after creating the Communist Manifesto.

Built in the 1860s, The Crescent is situated at 18-21 The Crescent and 1 Massey Street.

In recent times it proved popular with students and real ale enthusiasts, being just a few hundred metres from the University of Salford.

The Crescent was known for its cheap food and drinks, with main meals starting from as little as £2.

After its purchase by Chinese investors in 2016, some feared it would go the same way as its previous neighbour, the Black Horse Hotel which was demolished in 2016 and replaced with luxury flats.

Before the recent plans to reopen the pub, rumoured to adopt its former name The Red Dragon, there were claims it could have seen a rebrand as a Chinese cultural centre, along with a conference centre for medical students and student accommodation.

These ideas were later scrapped by developers.

It has also seen its share of controversy.

Councillors Richard Critchley and John Warmisham spoke out about the pub’s seemingly neglected state.

Others took to Twitter to reminisce over their memories of the landmark.

No date has been released by the developers for the pub’s reopening.
