Last week, Salford City Radio celebrated its 14th year as Salford’s beloved community radio station.
The radio posted on social media, announcing the birthday line-up.
DJs and guests on the air paid tribute to the station, playing number 1 albums and tracks at the time of its creation.
Over the course of 14 years, the volunteer radio station has featured lots of community DJs, shows and many varied music genres.
The station opened in 2007 and has remained open on the passion its volunteers have for radio.
It has also received multiple awards and runner-ups, including the Queen’s Award for voluntary service in 2016 and the Salford Business Award in 2010.
Jill Bowyer, manager of the station, spoke about Salford City Radio and her history there.

“[The station] has just grown…when we first started community radio was quite new.”
Jill has been a volunteer at the station for 13 years. She has had a paid role as manager for three years but still volunteers her spare hours for the radio.
“It’s too good of an organisation to let close…I really believe in community radio and what it can do for the community.
“People are constantly contacting us and want to volunteer…so we’re an integral part of our community.”
Volunteers involved with Salford City Radio showed their appreciation for their local station on its birthday.
Ray Phillips, a presenter at the station, commented:
“Salford City Radio 94.4 FM is a superb local resource for Salford and surrounding towns. I’ve only been involved for a short time but I want to wish Jill and the rest of the presenters a very happy birthday.”
“There’s an awful lot of passion…the volunteers we’ve got are like an extended family” Jill said.
