The 100th venue has joined the Be Open on Breastfeeding Salford (BOOBS) to allow local mothers to breastfeed openly.

Formed in 2014 by Visit from the Stork CIC, BOOBS is a community designed to support and empower mothers while giving them a safe space to breastfeed without judgment.

“We believe every mum should have the chance to have a happy, safe and comfortable breastfeeding journey,” say BOOBS on what they want to achieve within their community.

Initially starting the campaign three years ago with the goal of reaching 100 Salford venues, the organisation has finally hit their target in October 2021. Hadfields Cafe in Pendlebury became the proud 100th venue to opt into the positive breastfeeding campaign.

Each ‘BOOBS approved’ venue allows mothers to breastfeed within the establishment without fear of judgment. Staff in each venue aim to make mothers ‘feel safe and welcome’. The campaign has seen cafes, restaurants, leisure and wellness centres, libraries, gyms, nurseries, and soft play centres across Salford sign up to become breastfeeding-friendly.

BOOBS also hold a monthly breastfeeding cafe at the Swinton and Pendlebury leisure centre to allow mothers to come together and access support.

Kathryn Stock, creative project assistant for parent-organisation Visit from the Stork, explained: “[W]e welcome mums to come and breastfeed, have a chat with our trained breastfeeding supporter if they have any questions as well as chatting with other mums. It creates a really nice, safe environment for both mum and baby.”

“Sadly, some mums are made to feel like breastfeeding in public is indecent when all they are doing is feeding their child; that’s why we like to have the breastfeeding venues to advertise a safe and pleasant space they will be welcome in.”
