Salford will face Wigan Warriors at the DW Stadium in round six of the Betfred Challenge Cup following yesterday’s draw.

The tie will take place Friday 25 March, at 7:35pm with both Greater Manchester sides fighting for a spot in the cup quarter-finals.

It is one of just three all Super League clashes and will be covered live on TV by Premier Sports.

The other Super League ties will see the Leeds Rhinos host rivals Castleford Tigers, whilst fellow Yorkshire club Wakefield Trinity will travel to Warrington Wolves.

This is the first round in which the Super League clubs will compete and all 11 clubs will know that they are just three wins away from a cup final appearance.

The venue of the final will move away from Wembley for the first time since 2006 as the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is set to host the showpiece event for the first time since its completion in 2019.

The Red Devils will be hoping to make a second challenge cup final appearance in three seasons after they fell agonisingly short in a 17-16 defeat to Leeds in the 2020 final.

Salford’s first and last Challenge Cup win came back in 1938 against Barrow, having made seven appearances in the final overall.

This is the first challenge cup meeting between Salford and Wigan since the 2017 semi final when the Warriors ran out 27-14 winners.

The two sides have met 12 times in the cup prior to this meeting with both teams having won 6 games.

The Red Devils were eliminated at the quarter-final stage in last years competition, losing 19-18 to eventual runners up Castleford Tigers, in golden point extra time.

Salford and Wigan have had differing fortunes in the opening rounds of the season.

The Warriors currently sit fourth having won four of their opening five games whilst Rowley’s men are in eighth having lost their last three matches.

Salford fans reacted to the draw on social media:

The Red Devils face Leeds Rhinos this Friday looking to bounce back from consecutive losses to Hull KR, Huddersfield and Hull FC in the league.
