Salford Red Devils RFL - Peaceful protest march

Salford Red Devils supporters’ group, The 1873, have shared that “the fight starts now” following their weekend protest that saw hundreds attend.

The organised peaceful and lawful protest was scheduled ahead of the fixture against Wakefield Trinity, but on Friday (15 August) evening the game was cancelled.

Despite the cancellation of the fixture, the supporters group encouraged fans to continue to turn up and use it to be “seen and heard.”

Salford Red Devils currently sit bottom of the league table with 19 defeats from 21 games so far this season, it has been a sad season for all supporters.

And following the 80-6 defeat to Hull FC, that saw Paul Rowley assemble a makeshift squad ahead of the game – it led to the fans calling for answers

And with five remaining the club wanted to use the march to “demand greater communication, transparency, and accountability from the club’s ownership.”

The march saw hundreds of Salford supporters come together and walk together with banners and flags waving in protest from 1pm towards the Salford Community Stadium.

Following the protest, ‘The 1873’ supporters group said today (Monday 18 August): “We want to sincerely thank every single supporter who turned out to yesterday’s march.

“To see Salford fans in their hundreds, standing shoulder to shoulder, was truly inspiring.”

The supporters group also shared that there was a presence from other clubs including Wigan, Warrington, and Widnes, and said that support “shows that this fight resonates far beyond our own fanbase.”

They continued: “It’s a clear sign of the strength of feeling among rugby league supporters toward the terrible ownership of our club – and we should all be proud of the unity and determination we showed today (Sunday 17 August).

“There haven’t been many proud moments for fans this year but today was one and the immense pride of those scenes will stay with us for a long time.

“The passion, pride and resilience of Salford fans is unrivalled, and we will not stop fighting until we achieve what this club, and its loyal supporters, truly deserve.”
