Salford City have signed former Blackpool goalkeeper Mackenzie Chapman on a one-year deal.
The 23-year-old, from Bury, had been a free agent after seeing his contract expire at Bloomfield Road earlier in May.
He featured in several pre-season matches for multiple clubs and trained with the PFA’s squad for unsigned professionals – a union-backed program that provides structured training and trial matches designed to help players secure new contracts.
Chapman, who made his EFL debut at Oldham during the 2020/2021 season, has spent the last couple of weeks training with Salford under the scrutiny of manager Karl Robinson.
The young shot-stopper used to attend Ammies’ matches as a supporter and will play a role as Salford push for promotion from League Two.
By signing a one-year deal, Chapman strengthens an already competitive goalkeeping department, with Matty Young and Mark Howard both impressing in the early stages of the campaign.
The former Accrington Stanley, Burnley and Manchester United academy player has previously worked with Karl Robinson during his time at Oxford United, and says that was also a draw.
He explained: “Karl was brilliant for me. I was a young boy moving away from home for the first time, aged 17 or 18. We had a great working relationship, he really tested me, and with the opportunity to come back to work with him again, I couldn’t say no.
“I grew up only a couple of miles up the road, and it was a big thing when the investment came in. Me and my friends would nip down to see the Class of ‘92, so to see where the club is now in the Football League and pushing to get into League One, fingers crossed, it’s great to see.
“I had great academy learning and it built a strong foundation for my career. Hopefully, I can put that into place here.”
