Cornelius O’Keeffe says joining his local Worsley Woods parkrun was “the last puzzle piece” in his mental health recovery journey and he hopes his story will inspire others this World Mental Health Day.

10 October is World Mental Health Day, which aim’s to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilise efforts in support of mental health campaigns.
Parkrun is a global, community-based running event that offers free, weekly, timed 5-kilometre runs. It encourages regular physical activity, community engagement, and inclusivity giving runners of different ages and abilities a structured chance to exercise and socialise.

O’Keeffe began his health and wellness journey in 2016, determined to improve his mindset and fitness levels, but in July 2020, he suffered a mental health breakdown, he explained: “In July 2020, I unfortunately suffered a major mental health breakdown.

“The support I received from Salford Community Leisure was immeasurable at the beginning of my recovery and throughout.

“I started to get back into my fitness journey as a way of guiding me through my recovery.

“Along the way, finding parkrun was the crucial last part to my recovery.”

Cornelius O’Keeffe is a regular at the Worsley Parkrun.

It is not just the being active outdoors element which matters most to O’Keeffe but the social side of the community event, he explained: “Parkrun is a great way to maintain my fitness, however, the main reason I love parkrun is the social element.

“I have been able to meet new friends and listen to their own stories about mental health recovery, helping me understand more about my own issues.

“To relate to others’ experiences is so valuable, as it helps me to navigate how best to manage my own mental health in a more positive manner, therefore helping me lead a happier life.”

O’Keeffe’s introduction to parkrun came through a friend at a local run club who volunteered on a Saturday morning, he explained: “I first heard of parkrun in 2022, from one of my running buddies at my local run club, who volunteered at Worsley Woods parkrun.

“I love meeting new people and making friends, and parkrun seemed like the perfect opportunity for this, as well as keeping fit!

“At the first parkrun I attended, I noticed the positive atmosphere immediately.

“It will always remain with me, how happy the people were at parkrun and it is the reason why I keep returning to Worsley Woods parkrun.”
