Police investigating the murder of a ‘remarkably friendly’ man who was found dead on the edge of a Salford playing field, are offering £50,000 for information.

Julius Matera is believed to have died at some point between the evening of Friday, October 13, 2023 and the early hours of the morning on Saturday, October 14.

Despite being reported missing 10 days later, Julius’ body was not found until December 7, when officers searched an area of ‘dense shrubbery’ at Broughton Cricket and Rugby Club situated behind Great Cheetham Street West.

Three people were arrested on suspicion of the murder of the 43-year-old and have since been released, but remain under investigation.

Detective Inspector, Rachel Smith from GMP’s Major Incident team said: “We are still committed to investigating Julius’ death and we know that someone in the community has answers about what happened in the property that evening. Even the smallest detail could be the missing piece in this investigation.

“We need anyone who may have information that could lead us to finding the person or people responsible for Julius’ death to come forward so we can provide answers and closure for a grieving family.”

Appealing to the public, Julius’ family has urged anyone who has any information to contact the police so that his ‘soul can find peace’.

Paying tribute, they said: “Julius was remarkably friendly, considerate, respectful, funny and adventurous. He was always ready to help when he could.

“He had such an adventurous spirit and a curious mind that made him want to explore and discover things in his own special way with a keen ambition in current affairs and commentary.

“He had a way of making people smile even in the toughest of times and is remembered for that smile and a chuckle that captured his joyful spirit.

“If there is anyone in Manchester who anywhere else who knows anything about his last hours, please contact the police and try to help them affording him justice and let his soul find peace.”
