Celebrity chef Marco Pierre White paid a visit to Edison Bar in Monton last week.
White, who became the youngest chef to earn three Michelin stars, enjoyed a full English breakfast at the family-run bar, on Monton Road.
Since opening four years ago, the bar has become one of the area’s most popular spots, serving brunch by day, before becoming a ‘mini-nightclub’ at night.
Luke Grannell, co-owner of the venue, said: “I didn’t actually know Marco was coming in or anything. It was a standard day, I was just doing some work on my laptop like usual and then I came downstairs and he was just sat there in the corner having a coffee. The first thing I thought was what is Marco Pierre White doing in a cafe in Monton?
“My stepdad, Michael Harrison, runs Bolton Food Festival and he knows Marco, so I phoned him and asked, ‘Why is Marco here?’. He was meant to be meeting him, but he turned up early and Michael didn’t know he was coming to Edison’s.
“He had a full English and he was talking to me about our supplier and what meat we use. We do use a good supplier because my stepdad knows all the good ones. We only source our products from the best local people, from locally sourced farms.
“Marco ate all of his food. The only thing he didn’t eat was the black pudding but he doesn’t like that. He said the food was very, very good. Apparently, he’s going to come back in a few weeks because he’s back up here. So, if he wants to come back, it can’t have been that bad?”
White trained chefs such as Gordon Ramsey, Mario Batali and Curtis Stone and was dubbed the first celebrity chef, as well as starring as the head chef on ITV’s Hell’s Kitchen in 2007.

Luke continued: “My head chef is from Venezuela, he’s called Angel. It was a pretty quiet Wednesday and I went in to tell him that one of the biggest chefs in the world was sat in the house. He said ‘you’re joking’. I said ‘I’m not and he wants a breakfast.’ I could just see his face turn colour.
“He said ‘I’ve got to make the best breakfast I’ve ever made right now.’ I’ve never seen him like that. Obviously, his food’s always good, but he was on it. He was not going to mess any of it up. When I served the food, I could see that he was bricking it. Luckily, I brought the plate back and the only thing left was the black pudding and a piece of toast. Happy days.”
Luke runs the bar alongside his brother Jamie and father Kevin. Originally, Edison’s was set up as a side-project, but has blossomed over time into one of the area’s most popular establishments.
Edison’s serve homemade sandwiches, full English breakfasts and other brunch items in the day, before hosting live music and serving cocktails in the evening.
Luke said: “We’re unique. We’re not just for the younger or older crowd, we have a very good mixture of people. We’re the kind of place on Monton Road that everyone ends up at later on. We probably have some of the best live music acts in the area.
“It almost becomes like a mini club. You don’t get that kind of environment anywhere else on Monton Road.”
Edison’s is now preparing for Halloween weekend, with new special themed cocktails added to the menu.
