The son of a Manchester United treble winner made his presence known against Wolves Under-21s by scoring two late goals to book Salford’s place in the knockout stage of the Vertu Trophy.

Ruben Butt, the son of Salford City board member Nicky, netted a quickfire second-half double in torrential rain as Salford beat Wolves Under-21s 4-2 to secure their place in the round of 32.

While the 19-year-old had already made four first-team appearances, this represented his first start in a Salford shirt.

The son of former Manchester United stalwart Nicky Butt came in the 77th minute when he cut inside from the left wing and finished expertly into the far corner.

The Salford academy graduate doubled his tally just five minutes later when he recieved a long ball over the top and placed a second past the Wolves keeper, extending Salford’s lead in the final minutes.

Butt’s finishes led Salford to a third win in three matches in the Vertu Trophy as the side topped a group which also contained Stockport and Wigan.

“Salford played really well, and we scored two great goals,” stated Salford City manager Karl Robinson in his mid-week press conference ahead of his team’s visit to MK Dons.

Robinson highlighted that Nicky Butt is working hard behind the scenes to keep his son grounded despite his excellent start to life in senior football.

“Nicky’s been upset about the praise his son is getting. Nicky is ruthless with him.”

Given, Nicky registered 39 England caps alongside 411 appearances for Manchester, Newcastle and Birmingham, won eight Premier League titles and a Champions League during his playing career, he will have high aspirations for his son.

A tenacious and dependable midfielder in his playing days, Nicky was lauded for his work rate and ability to break up play.
He also possessed the ability to score off a well-timed run, a trait displayed by his son on Tuesday night with his second finish.

“I’m made up for him; he’s a tremendous young person, said Robinson when asked about Ruben’s double.

“He really works hard, I do believe in his talent I really do.”

Salford face Milton Keynes Dons away next on Saturday 15th November. The Ammies are currently edging MK Dons by one point with 26 points in 4th place.

“I think they’re probably the best team in the league” stated Robinson when asked about his next League Two fixture.

“I’m really looking forward to it.”

Salford City will travel to MK Dons on Saturday 16 November, 3pm kick-off.
