Salford Youth Service

Salford youth service will be working with Eccles, Irlam, and Cadishead officers to offer free bike maintenance and registration to help tackle theft.

The Salford Youth Bike Project has provided more than 500 old and unwanted bikes to young people in need across the city already, which aims to help residents move around Salford freely.

The youth services and local officers will be at Cadishead Park between 4-6 pm on Thursday, 27 November, to help register bikes to the only police approved cycle database.

The site also enables members of the public to check second-hand bikes to assist them in trying to avoid purchasing stolen goods.

On top of the mobile unit that is in place, travelling across more disadvantaged local areas, this meeting will be a chance to register new bikes in time for the Christmas period.

With bike theft being a prevalent issue across the UK, this meeting stresses the importance of keeping them safe, not just over the Christmas period but also all year round.

With 66,960 reported thefts in 2023/24 and likely many more unreported. In the year 2023, 3,108 bike thefts in Greater Manchester took place, but only 32 ended in a charge.

A YouGov survey from 2022 revealed that 77% of UK respondents do not expect the police to properly investigate bike thefts, the highest level of distrust among 15 surveyed crimes.

With support from local officers, the project hopes to help young people gain the confidence to travel safely, protect their bikes, and reduce the amount of unreported bike thefts in the Greater Manchester area.
