Salford City Lionesses interim manager Caz Simone has praised their players after they battled to a hard-fought 1-0 win over promotion rivals Ashton Ladies to maintain their position at the top of the Division One Central.
A goal from Charlie Ferguson in the second half secured the win as the Lionesses moved four points clear of Ashton.
After the game, Simone said: “We knew coming in it was going to be a difficult game as they are a really good team. Ashton play good football, they’re physical and they all work hard for 90 minutes.”
Both sides had chances in both halves, but in the end, a corner taken by Lizzie Jervis in the 75th minute ensured the Lionesses the win.
“I think the way the girls applied themselves and listened, we have got the result at the end of the day.”
The Lionesses have now won three matches out of three and are hoping this momentum can keep them going into their next few games.
“To be honest the last few weeks we have been working on because we are a team of two halves, we know that if we start quick, we usually don’t end quick; if we don’t start quick then we tend to fall off in the second half.
“I think it was about today making sure we can last the 90 minutes so i would just say the consistency so everything we did today we need to take into the next week and not let it drop.”
Salford City Lionesses sit on 30 points after 14 games and a crucial win against Ashton Ladies has helped to keep them fighting for promotion.
The next game for the Lionesses is scheduled to be against Mossley Hill Women on the seventh of December away at 2pm.
