Great British Bake Off finalist Dr Tamal Ray surprised some of the nation’s leading medical professionals with a special birthday cake to celebrate 25 years of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

Following his star-making turn as a contestant in the sixth series of the hit BBC show, Dr Tamal Ray, a trainee anaesthetist himself, baked a special treat to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the RCoA at a special event at the Park Royal Hotel in Warrington.

The date marked the anniversary of the College receiving its Royal Charter and was celebrated with a joint event by the Manchester and Liverpool Societies.

Dr Tamal Ray said: “The pressure situations in the Great British Bake Off were good training for life as an anaesthetist.

“Anaesthetists are the patient’s doctor before, during and after surgery, providing care and support at a critical time.

“It’s been a pleasure to help celebrate 25 years of landmarks in anaesthetics, and share some of my other skills with my colleagues.”

A local touch to proceedings was provided by Dr David Whitaker, consultant anaesthetist at Central Manchester University Hospitals, who gave a presentation on the history of anaesthesia in Manchester.

Dr Liam Brennan, President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists said: “Even though we only have a short history as a Royal College, we have a long record of achievement.

“At the heart of this legacy is engaging and educating the next generation of anaesthetists, and we are committed to improving patient’s safety, well-being and outcomes following surgery.”

Anaesthesia has grown to become the largest secondary care speciality in the NHS, with more than two thirds of all hospital inpatients being seen by an anaesthetist during their treatment.

Since wrapping up his run on the Great British Bake Off, Tamal has since returned to TV on Channel 4’s Be Your Own Doctor, in which he helps debunk common health myths.
