Bleakholt animal sanctuary celebrated its 60th anniversary by raising more than £10,000 at an open day.

The sun shone as more than 1,000 animal lovers turned out in support of the Rossendale animal sanctuary. The open day consisted of music, games, stalls selling crafts, kids rides, and face painting. The great Bleakholt Bake-off showed off and sold home-made cakes and biscuits and The Lancashire Owls Trust appeared with owls for children to hold. The April open day raised more than £10,000 for Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary.

Deputy manager Vicky McDonald said; “The event today has been a monumental success and we are extremely happy and proud that our local community has continued to support us and the work do and we have done for 60 years.

“The money from our donations helps us provide love and look after hundreds of abandoned and unwanted animals that unfortunately have to come to us every year.”

The sanctuary holds four open days a year to raise funds as they rely solely on public donations.

Visitors to the open day got up close to the vast range of animals that live at Bleakholt. The horses, donkeys, pigs, and chickens live out their lives at the sanctuary, but the charity needs to find homes for more than 1,00 dogs and cats every year.

Denise Corrigan, a volunteer for Bleakholt for 35 years, said; “The ultimate aim for all our animals is to find them a new home. The adoption rate has gone up over my time at Bleakholt but we are still getting so many dogs and cats that come to us for many reasons but the main reason is that they’re unwanted. We give the best care to all the animals but nothing will be beat a loving home.”

Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary will be holding its next open day on July 9.
