Sale Sharks have announced the signing of full-back Simon Hammersley from Newcastle Falcons.

The 26-year-old will join the club on a three-year deal in the summer after activating a relegation release clause in his contract at Newcastle.

Since joining Newcastle while studying at Durham University, Hammersley has made 103 appearances and despite the Falcons’ relegation, enjoyed an excellent season, gaining 1,490 metres with ball in hand, the second most in the Premiership.

His arrival adds further quality to the Sharks’ back three, which already includes England internationals Chris Ashton, Denny Solomona and Marland Yarde.

Speaking on the move, Hammersley is looking forward to getting started at his new club.

“I am hugely excited for the next chapter of my career, Sale are a brilliant, ambitious side and play a great style of rugby,” he explained.

“I am really looking forward to getting started in the summer.”

Sale Sharks director of rugby, Steve Diamond was thrilled with the addition of the former England Saxon.

He said: “Simon has been an outstanding performer for Newcastle over the last couple of years, in particular against Sale.”

“So when the opportunity arose to sign him we acted swiftly. He adds excellent depth to our backline and will be challenging for the number 15 shirt next season, and we look forward to welcoming Simon to Carrington in the summer.”

Hammersley will link up with his new teammates when they return for pre-season training at the beginning of July.
