Swinton Morrisons say they are giving free packed lunches to families in poverty in Salford because so many people are struggling to feed their children.

The grocery shop in Salford along with the other 497 stores across the country are providing 30 lunch boxes every day over the half-term holidays.

Swinton’s community champion, Christina Edwards said: “It’s just terrible to think of any child going hungry. It’s just not fair. So, we do really get a great feeling from doing it

“I’ve been going out in the lockdown period since the pandemic began at end of March, so I’ve been going out in the community and been seeing places where they have been desperate like food banks and food clubs where they are desperate.

“If they’re given something like a tin of corned beef, like some protein or something, it means so much to them because there’s a lot of people out there who are struggling.

Shoppers can also get involved and buy a ‘pick-up pack’ that contains essentials and take it to the till point with the rest of their items, which will be distributed to the community.

“The customers have been really generous and it really feels like the community is pulling together in these hard times.

“The first day of putting the the lunch packs out for the customers to get involved with and I’ve already had to replenish them this afternoon because people are just buying them straight away.

“If people keep losing their jobs prices of goods keep rising and people are out of work, it’s only going to get worse.”

The lunch packs are being donated to local food banks and available to any family in need.

The lunch boxes include a sandwich, Soreen snack pack and a piece of fruit and are made fresh at the stores salad bar.

The retail chain aim to give out 14,940 packed lunches around the country to prevent children going hungry.

Christina said: “My store manager, operations manager and my peoples manager have insisted on buying some packs too to play their part.”
