A Salford triple jumper has qualified for the IAAF World Indoor Championships, following a stunning display at the British Indoor Championships on Saturday.

Naomi Metzger, a former student of All Hallows in Salford, won her ninth national gold medal in the British Indoor Athletics Championships on Saturday with a jump of 13.81 metres, which ensured her spot at the World Championships.

The British Indoor Championships are used as qualifiers for the IAAF World Indoor Championships, with the World Championships being held on Friday 18 March in Belgrade.

Metzger, who is also a resident of Salford, did four jumps within 10 centimetres of her winning jump, meaning that her ninth victory at these championships was never in real doubt.

She will be hoping this victory will lead to her first international success, which is entirely feasible if she can emulate the 14.22 metres personal best she achieved in 2021, and the performances she produced in youth athletics.

She has had success in youth competitions having achieved a bronze medal at the U20 European Championships, in Grosseto, Italy, in 2018.

Last year, she moved to Italy for training camps and is hoping that training with high profile Olympic athletes will ensure that she has the best possible chance of success.

This could provide the boost to improve on her seventh-placed finish at the 2019 European Indoor Championships, which was her best finish at an international competition, and potentially achieve success at a World Championships.
