An ’80s themed festival is coming to Buile Hill Park this summer with the aim to bring an enjoyable and affordable day out for Salfordians.

Back2the80s line up includes tribute acts for Bon Jovi and Whitney Houston and will be headlined by Martin Kemp doing an ’80s DJ set.

Organiser of the July 14-15 event, Colin Slamon, said: “I was invited to do some compering for a festival that had just started in Sale.

“Paul Barnes my business partner and I were at this event and thought we could do this better.”

He said that with Back2the80s they wanted to improve the things in festivals that put older people off such as making sure there were no long queues for loos or bars and that the toilets facilities were in a good state.

From that they believed that there was a market for a festival for people in their 50s playing 80s music.

Colin went on to say how the festival had to be affordable, relaxing and the quality of the artists had to be the best they could find.

The festival was first hosted in Monton’s New Hill Farm which they outgrew so they moved to Buile Hill Park which Colin felt nostalgic about.

He said: “We grew up in the area. I learnt to ride a bike in the same park we now do the festival … and if you had a strong arm you could hit my parents rooftop from where the stage sits.”

A big part of hosting the festival in Salford for them is so they are giving back to the community they grew up in.

They also give a percentage of their takings every year to the Wood Stream Mission a charity based in Salford that helps single parent families who are struggling.

The event kicks off on the Friday with an ABBA bingo night where a game of bingo will be played in the middle of a covers band set.

Then on Saturday the music begins at midday which goes on all day.
