A shirt signed by the Sale Sharks squad has already raised £6,000 for Mind charity in the Gallagher Premiership Rugby’s #Signed4Mind online auction.

The shirt, signed by the full 2019/20 Sharks squad, reached the mark after a week of auctioning that will see all proceeds raised go to the charity, as they continue to look after people’s mental health and wellbeing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The initiative has seen the league hold 12 separate auctions in which a signed shirt from each of the division’s teams will be available to bid on.

In total, the 12 shirts have raised over £15,000 for the charity following the first week of bidding. With supporters able to bid on them until midnight on Sunday 17 May 2020.

In a statement on the league’s official website, Gallagher Premiership Rugby Chief Executive Darren Childs was hoping the initiative could make a difference to communities across the country.

He said: “I’m delighted that Premiership Rugby, with the help of our brilliant clubs, can offer support to communities who need it most during this time.

“It’s been inspiring to see the way the Premiership Rugby clubs and their players have stepped up in a time of national crisis with campaigns like #MakeThatCall and we hope this shirt auction will make a big difference too.

“Mind do some incredible work to ensure no one has to face mental health problems alone and it’s even more important now, so please dig deep and help us to raise some much-needed funds for a great charity.”

Mind’s Head of Physical Activity, Hayley Jarvis, also commented: “We’re tremendously grateful to Premiership Rugby for choosing Mind to benefit from their #Signed4Mind fundraiser.

“We know the power that sport has to raise awareness and funds for mental health at a time when more people than ever need Mind’s support.

“We look forward to working closely with Premiership Rugby and hope that #Signed4Mind not only raises funds but also helps to break down the stigma around mental health. Encouraging more people to have their mate’s back through life’s ups and downs.”

It comes as part of the Gallagher Premiership Rugby’s commitment to helping people through the current situation surrounding the pandemic.

The league and its clubs also launched the #MakeTheMove campaign since the beginning of the pandemic. The campaign has seen players, coaches, famous fans and executives call supporters in isolation for a chat and to offer support.

The Sharks themselves also had their Community Trust get involved with the Two Point Six challenge last month, supporting people in the North West that have been affected by the pandemic.
