Salford Poverty Truth Commission has admitted that because the demand for their service is so high, they are struggling to assist everyone who needs it.
Many people in Salford and across the UK are particularly struggling with their gas and electric bills due to inflation which has caused an increased demand on services like the Salford Poverty Truth Commission.
Lead facilitator of the Salford Poverty Truth Commission, Sarah Whitehead, said: “We’ve been doing a lot with the council and their household fund but the demand on that service is so high that we are not able to help everybody that needs it.
“Many people in Salford are desperately asking people even on Facebook, strangers, if they can help and if they can support them.
“People are using tea lights to warm up food and eating really basic meals, such as pot noodles. So it really is a crisis.”
Areas in Salford like Broughton, Pendleton, Eccles and Swinton are being heavily affected. The minimal amount of services in those areas means many are having to travel far to go and find help in other spaces and groups.
Sarah assures that many grassroot led communities, such as the Salford Mutual Aid Coalition are offering support.
Sarah added: “We’re often getting people coming to us asking for support and help with food and with energy and if we can help, put money on their gas and electric meters because it takes a long time in that process to be assessed.”
