A local first aid group is set to hold a 2-hour course on first aid for treating children next month in Eccles.

Mini First Aid Salford, Bury, and Bolton, run by Julia Stubbs, was set up in November 2020, and sets out to teach parents and carers the “paediatric lifesaving skills” they need to keep their children safe.

MFA Salford Bury and Bolton is just a branch of a wider, national franchise of Mini First Aid groups across the country, and Julia was inspired to join up after a frightening experience with her young son:

“I have 1 son, Leo, who has just turned 2. He is the reason that I have ended up as an MFA trainer.

“he wasn’t very well when we first brought him home and we were re-admitted to hospital for 1 week until he recovered.

It made me realise that I wouldn’t know what to do if anything were to happen to him so my husband and I booked onto an MFA class.

“My husband calls me a nerd because I’m always like “but this could happen” or “but that could cause… ”

“I wouldn’t want to wrap him up in cotton wool or mollycoddle him, I’m all for him being curious and adventurous, but I guess in my head I’ve always got a silent risk assessment going on!”

Julia explained that the Baby and Child courses teach skills to deal with several ailments and emergencies:

“The Baby & Child covers CPR, choking, burns, bleeds, head bumps, breaks, febrile seizures and meningitis, from birth to puberty”

Julia went on to explain that the response to these courses has been very positive:

“We are still only starting out really, so working out which venues work and which don’t,

“Word of mouth is starting to spread and all our Facebook reviews have been five stars”

MFA also offers other courses such as first aid classes for children and teenagers, as well as paediatric and workplace emergency first aid courses

If you are interested in attending a Baby and Child course with MFA in Salford, the next course will be on the 10th June from 2pm to 4pm at Bridgewater Studios in Eccles, however there are other opportunities hosted outside of Salford for those willing to travel.

You can book your place at https://salford.minifirstaid.co.uk/, with courses starting at as little as £20 per person.
