Free heritage bus rides will be offered at a transport themed Christmas fair taking place this weekend at Cheetham Hill.
The Museum of Transport, Greater Manchester, is hosting its annual Christmas Cracker event on December 3rd and 4th, when part of its collection of heritage buses will be temporarily moved for nearly 100 stalls selling transport memorabilia including books, models and timetables – starting from 5p each.
Kelvin Platt, vice chairman of the museum, said: “We’ve acquired a large collection of timetables from the 1970s right to the current day, we’ve taken what we need to complete our museum collection and the excess ones will be made available for members of the public to buy.
“The upper exhibition hall will be emptied of most vehicles and the lower hall will be left as a display hall.”
A free heritage bus service between the museum and Shudehill interchange will operate every 20 minutes between 9am and 5pm, more details can be found here.
The museum intends to use a 1966 Salford City Transport Leyland PD2 on the shuttle, alongside a small fleet of Daimler, MCW and Leyland buses from the ’70s and ’80s.
Kelvin said: “It’s a chance to take a trip down memory lane and experience what Salford buses once were.
“Sometimes we get members of the public come just to ride on our vehicles, it tends to be quite a social event as some will meet up with people here that they haven’t seen all year and catch up about what they have done over the last 12 months.”
The Christmas Cracker event will take place between 10am and 4.30pm at the museum which can be found at Boyle Street, Cheetham Hill, Manchester M8 8UW. Standard admission charges of £5 will apply.
