Mind in Salford is hosting their first Mental Elf fun run this weekend on Sunday December 3.

The family friendly event encourages people to either run or walk the 5km course to raise money for the Salford-based mental health charity.

Mind in Salford is a local charity that provides vital services to make a positive difference to the well-being and mental health of local people. The charity has been putting local people first for over 50 years.

Eric the Elf is the prize for the best dressed elf on the day, so getting your best costume out is highly encouraged by the charity.

The run is taking place at Peel Park at 11am. The start and finish point of the run is by the statue in the middle of the park.

Kathryn Worden, fundraising manager at Mind, said: “Being a local mental health charity and getting the word out there so that people know we’re here to help if they need to contact us, that’s the most important thing.

“Also, just to be able to raise some money so that we can support the charity and sort of give it confidence going into 2024 to know that we’ve got the money to fund the services that we’re currently providing into the next one, two or three years that’s really essential.”

So far, Mind in Salford have raised over £2,000 worth of profit, but participants are encouraged to set up Go Fund Me pages to get sponsors so the money raised is expected to rise.

Other Mental Elf events have raised up to £5,000 for the local charities in the past.

There are currently 98 people signed up for the run but Kathryn is hoping it’ll keep going up: “I was hoping for 100 or so, those three figures would have been brilliant. I think there’ll be about 20 that come on the day, so ideally 130 people will take part.”

Mind in Salford are hoping to make the event a yearly thing, and want to possibly get market stalls at next years Mental Elf fun run.

Kathryn Worden thanked people for getting behind the event: “I just want to thank the community of Salford for getting behind it. We couldn’t do it without them and hopefully they now know that we’re here for them if they ever need us.”
