Local charity Emmaus Salford is calling upon the community to help in safeguarding the vulnerable during the current severe cold spell.

The appeal follows the announcement that Emmaus are grappling with their own housing challenges.

Jackie Smith, Chief Executive of Emmaus Salford said: “It’s essential to share that we, too, are grappling with housing challenges. Our current property may no longer be available to us soon, urging us to seek alternative locations to continue our vital work.

“We are currently collaborating with the local council to upgrade our sleep pods for emergency accommodation through referrals. This effort aims to provide a safe and warm refuge for individuals facing the harsh conditions of the streets.”

The charity is calling on local residents, businesses, and organisations to take “immediate action” to support the well-being of those specifically facing homelessness in these freezing times.

Jackie Smith, Chief Executive of Emmaus Salford said: “”During these bitterly cold winter months supporting rough sleepers is more crucial than ever.”

One way in which residents can help is by donating or handing out any spare clothes. Emmaus states that these donations are invaluable in “offering immediate comfort to those in need.”

Another way to help could involve offering warm meals and hot beverages to people on the streets. Emmaus encourages collaborating with local food providers and soup kitchens, or volunteering at community events that serve hot meals during the winter months.

Emmaus also suggests distributing care packages directly to homeless individuals or through working with local charities. Assemble care packages containing essential items like non-perishable food, water, hygiene products, and warm accessories.

Last but not least, residents can provide support to local charities through financial donations, volunteering time, or donating necessary supplies to ensure that shelters are adequately equipped to accommodate those in need.

Emmaus Salford supports people who have experienced homelessness by providing a home, meaningful work experience in a social enterprise and an opportunity to regain lost self-esteem to help rebuild their lives.
