An investigation will take place after a prisoner has died this week in the Salford prison, HMP Forest Bank.
Salford Now contacted the prison and an HMP Forest Bank spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a prisoner died at HMP Forest Bank on 29 January 2024. The next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with the family.”
Following the death, the prison have confirmed that an investigation is set to take place with the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.
“As with all deaths in custody, there will be an investigation by the independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman and therefore we are unable to comment further at this stage.”
The death is the latest in a series of fatalities in recent years at the Salford prison. They include Michael McDonagh (27) who was found unresponsive in his cell in February 2019 and Raymond Lucy (63) who was found dead in his cell in July of that year.
HMP Forest Bank is a Category B prison dedicated to adult males. The prison serves the Greater Manchester courts and maintains links with the local communities.
The prison is located along the River Irwell, in the Agecroft area of Pendlebury.
It was opened in January, 2000 and is owned and managed by Sodexo, a private prison operator. They have the contract to manage the prison until January 2025.
