A local filmmaker is screening his first ever production at the Cadishead Band & Hall this Saturday February 24.
44-year-old John Mackie, from Irlam, has created a film which explores men’s mental health in modern day society.
John added: “I’m a man in his 40s and I’ve had ups and downs and it’s clear within society that a lot of men are struggling, younger men and older men.
“That’s why I want to raise the conversation around mental health a bit more.”
The film follows the main character Rick Parsonage, played by John Mackie himself. Rick is an established Radio DJ who is “popular with the ladies” and popular with his mates.
Everything seems to be going well for Rick on the surface, as people would assume, but really Rick is struggling.
John said: “The idea is to pose the question, why did he do it?
“Because you have to watch it very carefully to see the signs and you have to watch men in your life very carefully to notice there’s something wrong with them.”
His film is shot around Salford as he wanted to “keep it community based and represent the Salford area as a filmmaker.” In addition to this, the crew who shot the production were from the Salford film school, Future Works.
The community seem eager to view the film as the venue on Locklands Lane has now reached its full capacity for the night.
John has already submitted the film to local, national and international film festivals to raise its visibility.
John said: “The idea is to gather enough funding from possible distributors to maybe do a feature film on this character and this story.
“Ultimately, I’m in the process of writing another (production) that covers PTSD, so I’m also trying to get some backing that way really.”
