A volunteer-led organisation for those no longer in full-time employment are providing events to learn, socialise and build a community for residents in Salford.
The organisation Salford u3a are encouraging residents in the community to join their group and participate in various events and groups.

Currently, Salford u3a host 50 groups that members can join including book clubs, family history and real ale.
The variety of groups provide an opportunity for its members to develop or learn new skills whilst socialising with each other and building friendships.
Mary McBride, the chair of the organisation said: “There’s learning in everything we do whether its a skill or just helping build our members confidence.”
Mary joined the organisation in January 2020, has been the chair of the organisation for almost three years.
Actively getting involved in the groups, she decided to join the organisation after feeling like she wanted to build more friendships across Salford.
She added: “For me I joined to make friends and connections but to also just do something in my spare time with other new people.”

Mary has even made a few ventures abroad with the European city breaks group in the organisation.
In 2024 the group went to Limoges, France and more recently in May 2025 they went to Memmingen, Germany.
A group of seven went to Germany where they still had independence to do their own things but had each other to relax with and enjoy a meal.
“I think there people willing to do it, you aren’t in each others pockets, but its nice to meet other members and socialise with someone on an independent trip.”

The organisation is striving to get as many local Salford residents who want to do something with their time or meet new people, to join them.
“We offer so much and I wish more people knew about it and took advantage of the services we provide.”
