An event is set to take place this June celebrating the community spirit of Walkden and the changes being made to the area.

The event hosted by Walkden in Bloom on Saturday 7 June will aim to bring the everyone in the town together in a ‘Grand explosion of Bloom’.

Residents are welcomed to the event which will be hosted at Hug in a Mug on the High Street, with the event hosting live music from a local band, an unveiling of a commemorative planter and a community litter pick.

The group are on a mission of maintaining and improving the town centre for all, with their new 100 railing planter pods, four three-tier planters and flower beds.

Walkden in BloomSo far, the group have encouraged members of the community to join in this mission with schools and groups planting pods and contributing towards litter picks.

Paul Whitelegg, the Vice Chair of Walkden in Bloom, “I’ve lived here 30 years, and I was so fed up with seeing nothing happening, so I thought let’s not moan let’s do something about it and we have, the community have.”

Walkden in Bloom was launched earlier this year by founders Paul Whitelegg, Vice Chair of Walkden in Bloom, and Councillor Irfan Syed – with the duo hosting a community litter pick and unveiled their first planter – marking a huge moment for the community project as they aim to make Walkden greener.

And with the success of the planters, the community group want to continue looking after Walkden, whilst also preserving the history of the area.

Walkden in Bloom is planning to create 4D holograms displayed in the town centre, where it will show the history of the town – local schools will also be able to contribute towards the creation of the 4D holograms as a school project.

Paul continued: “It means everything, its blowing everybody away because it shows the community spirit.”

Residents have taken a strong notice of Walkden in Bloom’s project, as one Walkden resident John Hopkins, who works in the building next to where this project is being completed, said.

“I am absolutely gobsmacked at the amount of rubbish collected in a few hours but the all-round general feel of how much better the area looks.”

And that is the mission from the community, with it being used to not only clean the area, but bring the community closer together, as Paul continued: “The coming together of the community has blown me away and I cannot thank them enough.”
