Catlin Mahaffey scored two goals in the opening three minutes as Salford City Lionesses beat local rivals Wigan Athletic 3-2.
The win lifted the Lionesses back to the summit of the North West Women’s Division One Central.
On an occasion when Caz Simone’s side led by three goals at half-time, Salford City Lionesses were given a scare as struggling Wigan threatened an unlikely comeback.
Mahaffey opened the scoring inside the first minute when she slotted the ball past the Wigan goalkeeper before and then doubled her tally for the day with a stunner to put the Ammies 2-0 up.
Beth Tattersall then added to the scoring in the 35th minute with the number 9 netting her seventh of the season in 14 matches.
Pressure was then put on Wigan Athletic after Aimee Woodward netted in 55th and 66th minutes of the game.
However, Salford City Lionesses stayed strong at the back to claim another three points to add onto the tally.
This win over local Greater Manchester rivals Wigan Athletic Ladies now puts the Salford City Lionesses in 2nd position on 24 points in the league table, only one point away from frontrunners Ashton Town Ladies, who are sat on 25 points with a game in hand.
The Lionesses’ next game is scheduled to be against MSB Woolton FC on the 16th of November.
