Salford Mayor Paul Dennett said “constructive conversations” have been held about the future of Salford Red Devils after they were wound up by the High Court over unpaid debts on Wednesday morning.

In a joint statement with the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, the pair responded to the court ruling and explained the next steps for a “new Salford Club” to be created.

It outlined plans for Salford Red Devils moving on after the news that the club was liquidated due to an unpaid tax bill to the HMRC, ending their 152-year history.

Dennett and Burnham said: “We understand that today will be concerning to those who are connected to the club; however, we believe that this is a positive decision and is a step in the right direction in securing this proud institution of rugby league.

“This club is vitally important to the Salford community and beyond, and it is a travesty that this has been allowed to go on for as long as it has.

“Earlier this week, we had constructive conversations about the future ownership of the club. It is now entirely for the RFL to determine who is best placed to take forward a new Salford Club.

“We believe that the RFL now has the correct governance procedures and leadership in place to make this decision, and we are optimistic that there will be a Salford team playing in the Championship in January 2026.

“As mayors, we truly believe that this situation can now move forward after this decision. We are committed to working with partners across the rugby league, supporters, community clubs, and national bodies to ensure the history of the Red Devils lives on”.

A meeting will be taking place with the RFL today to discuss the details of the process for new membership of the club. Former Red Devils CEO Chris Irwin is linked with the consortium bidding to set up a phoenix club in Salford.
